Some musicians spend a lifetime chasing credibility. Manny Cepeda was born into it.
Growing up rooted in the legendary Cepeda family — one of Puerto Rico's most storied musical dynasties — Manny didn't just inherit a love of rhythm. He inherited a responsibility to it. And for over five decades, he has honored that responsibility with every drumstick strike, every timbale roll, and every carefully crafted arrangement that bears his name.
A Career Written in Continents
Manny's professional story reads like an atlas. His debut came on San Juan's Channel 4, performing live on the celebrated Show de Vigoreaux, Puerto Rico's iconic variety television program. From there, he shared stages with Latin music royalty — Richie Ray, Willie Colon, and Babo Jimenez — names that any serious salsa fan will recognize immediately.
Then came the world. As leader of the U.S. Navy Show Band and the famous Navy Steel Band, Manny performed across South America, West Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe — playing for dignitaries, festival crowds, and everyone in between. Few musicians can claim that kind of global reach, and fewer still carry it with the humility Manny brings to his craft.
The San Diego Sound
Today, Manny is planting deep roots in San Diego, California, where he leads his own salsa band and continues composing and arranging Latin jazz for respected musicians in New York and Puerto Rico. His Latin Grammy nomination in 2017 confirmed what those who've seen him live already knew — this is an artist operating at the highest level of his genre.
On AirPlayRadio, you can catch two tracks that showcase the range of his artistry. "La Cumbia de California" is a sun-soaked, groove-driven celebration that bridges his Caribbean roots with his West Coast home. "El Abanico" unfolds with the kind of rhythmic sophistication that only comes from someone who has truly lived inside the music.
If you're new to Manny Cepeda, consider yourself lucky — you're discovering a legend while there's still time to say you found him early. Hit play. You'll understand everything immediately.
