Some musicians spend a lifetime chasing greatness. Manny Cepeda was born into it.
Raised within the legendary Cepeda family — a Puerto Rican dynasty synonymous with authentic Latin music and bomba tradition — Manny didn't just inherit a surname. He inherited a calling. And over the course of more than 50 years as a professional musician, he has honored that calling on stages across six continents, in television studios, Navy bandstands, and intimate jazz venues alike.
A Story That Starts on Live TV
Manny's first professional gig wasn't open mic night. It was the Show de Vigoreaux, a highly acclaimed variety television program on Puerto Rico's Channel 4, where a young Manny held down the drum kit and timbales with the kind of confidence that comes from deep roots. From there, the trajectory only steepened — performing alongside heavyweights like Richie Ray, Willie Colón, and Babo Jimenez, artists whose names still echo through the history of salsa music.
The World Was His Rehearsal Space
As leader of the U.S. Navy Show Band and the celebrated Navy Steel Band, Manny took Latin rhythms to corners of the globe most musicians only read about — West Africa, South America, the Caribbean, and Europe. These weren't just performances; they were cultural exchanges, proof that the pulse of Latin music is a universal language.
What You'll Hear
Today, Manny is based in San Diego, California, leading his own salsa band while composing and arranging Latin jazz for prominent musicians in New York, San Diego, and Puerto Rico. A Latin Grammy nominee in 2017, his artistry has never been more refined. His tracks La Cumbia de California and El Abanico offer a perfect entry point — layered, warm, and rhythmically alive. There's a lived-in richness to his sound, the kind you can't manufacture in a studio. It's the sound of someone who has played everywhere, for everyone, and still has something to say.
If you've never heard Manny Cepeda before, consider yourself lucky. You get to hear it all for the first time. Hit play — your Latin music education starts now.
